Tadcaster lies on the River Wharfe between Leeds and York. Originally named Calcaria (place of limestone) by the Romans, it was a small settlement, serving as a resting place for travellers and a staging post on the London to York road. Its limestone has been used for many famous buildings, including a Roman Fort in York and York Minster.
