Alcohol Responsibility Notes From Mark Hunter

Beer and the pub are two great British institutions. Most people enjoy a drink, and alcohol plays an important role in our society.

However, in a minority of people and circumstances, drinking can cause problems. Some drink and drive, others binge-drink or become aggressive. Even responsible drinkers can occasionally drink too much.

This behaviour is damaging to society and to our businesses - people don't want to be in pubs with drunks.

It is therefore in all of our interests to tackle these problems, so that the majority of people can continue to enjoy a beer or two with their friends in a safe and pleasant environment, without harming themselves or others.

Our message is simple: Enjoy yourself but take it easy!

The government recognises that the factors that cause irresponsible drinking are complex. They also accept that the most effective remedies will be achieved through partnership between themselves, industry bodies, drinks producers, retailers and, vitally, consumers.

While some issues such as drink-driving require legislation and rigorous police enforcement, self-regulation has proven to be the best way forward in other areas. Increasingly, companies are taking initiatives to complement industry-wide activity.

For instance, Molson Coors (UK) Brewers runs a campaign in Scotland, promoting responsible drinking in conjunction with our sponsorship of 'Old Firm' football.

This website provides information about enjoying alcohol responsibly - whether you are involved in producing or retailing alcoholic drinks or simply enjoying a beer yourself.
